KATHMANDU : Minister for Urban Development Sita Gurung has said that no one should engage in politicking by showing garbage.

The remarks of Minister Gurung come amid Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) stopping to collect garbage from Singha Durbar—the principal secretariat of the federal government—alleging federal government of non-cooperation to manage garbage generated from Kathmandu Valley.

Talking briefly to media persons after the meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) on Monday, Minister Gurung said that the ministry is only responsible for coordinating the waste management of Kathmandu. She said that the responsibility of waste management lies with the KMC and the ministry will not hesitate to play a coordinating role for management.

Minister Gurung also said that there was a discussion in the ministry regarding the demands put forth by the KMC and that they are going to proceed by forming a committee to solve the problem. “No one should engage in politics by showing garbage,” she said, adding that the federal government is ready to help solve the problem.

Minister Gurung said that they have no qualms about playing a coordinating role. “In the past, the Ministry of Urban Development coordinated the construction of the road to Banchare Danda and fulfilled its responsibility for the construction of other physical infrastructure structures,” she added. “We have said that we will immediately hold a meeting and prepare a committee and take a decision on what can be done to move forward. By showing the garbage, we should not do politics, we should dispose of it. We are committed to that.”
