KATHMANDU : The World Teachers’ Day is being observed today to celebrate the work of teachers. At the call of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Day has been observed on October 5 each year since 1994 to honor teachers’ communities around the globe.
The UNESCO states the “Day commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.”
This year’s theme is “The Teachers We Need for the Education We Want: The Global Imperative to Reverse the Teacher Shortage”.
The Nepal Teachers’ Federation has extended best wishes to all teachers and staff members on this occasion. It hopes the Day will inspire the entire teacher’s community to collectively create pressure on the government to proceed with the School Education Bill in accordance with the agreements reached with teachers on September 22.
